Our Adoption Process

We designed our adoption process to be thoughtful without being burdensome. It usually takes one to two weeks from application to homecoming, and every step exists to make sure the cat and the family are a great match.

  1. Browse and inquire. Look through the cats on our site and reach out about anyone who catches your eye. If you're not sure, we're happy to help you narrow it down.
  2. Submit an application. A short online form covering your household, other pets, and what you're looking for in a cat.
  3. Conversation with a matchmaker. A friendly phone or video call — usually 15 to 20 minutes — so we can understand your household and share what we know about the cat.
  4. Meet the cat. In-person meet-and-greets happen in the foster home or at an adoption event. Bring the whole family.
  5. Finalize adoption. Sign the adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and bring your new family member home with all their records.
  6. Post-adoption support. We stay in touch. Behavioral questions, veterinary referrals, litter box mysteries — we're here.

Adoption Requirements

  • Adopters must be at least 21 years old.
  • All members of the household should be comfortable with the adoption.
  • Renters must have landlord approval or a pet-friendly lease.
  • Existing pets should be up to date on veterinary care.
  • Cats must be kept as indoor pets. Screened patios (catios) and supervised leashed outings are welcome.
  • Declawing is not permitted.

Costs and Fees

Adoption fees are: kittens (under 6 months) $200, adult cats $150, bonded pairs $250, and senior cats (over 8) $75. These fees cover a portion of the medical care we've invested in each cat — spay/neuter surgery, FVRCP and rabies vaccines, FeLV/FIV testing, deworming, microchipping, and any additional treatment they needed.

Application Process

Applications can be started online or by contacting our adoption team. We ask for two references (personal or professional), your current veterinarian's contact information if applicable, and consent for us to reach out to your landlord if you rent. We do not perform surprise home visits; we do sometimes schedule short home tours by appointment for cats with particular needs.

Preparing Your Home

Before your new cat comes home, choose one room to serve as their decompression space for the first several days. Provide a litter box, food and water, a scratching post, a soft bed, and a hiding spot. Cat-proof by securing loose cords, removing toxic plants (especially lilies), and latching cabinets with hazardous substances. Our team will walk you through more details before pickup.

Benefits of Adoption

When you adopt, you save two lives: the cat you bring home, and the cat who takes their place in our foster network. You also gain a companion whose personality, behavior, and needs are known — because they've lived in a family home for weeks or months before meeting you. Studies link cat ownership with lower stress, improved mood, and reduced risk of heart disease. And you become part of a warm community of adopters, fosters, and volunteers who share your values.

Adoption FAQ

How long does the adoption process take?

Most adoptions are finalized within one to two weeks of application. Timing depends on how quickly we can schedule your meet-and-greet and complete a reference check.

What is the adoption fee?

Adoption fees typically range from $125 for adult cats to $200 for kittens, with discounted fees for bonded pairs and senior cats. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, vaccines, FeLV/FIV testing, deworming, microchipping, and initial vet care.

Can I adopt if I rent?

Yes. We ask for landlord approval or a pet-friendly lease clause. Renting does not disqualify anyone — thoughtful, prepared renters are excellent homes.

Do you adopt to families with children?

Absolutely, and we match temperament carefully. Some cats thrive with kids; others prefer quieter homes. Our matchmakers help find the right fit.

Can I return a cat if things don't work out?

Yes. Cats adopted from Carson Cats can always be returned to us — no questions asked. We would rather welcome a cat back than see them go to an uncertain home.
