Preventive care basics

Annual wellness exams, core vaccinations (FVRCP and rabies), and year-round parasite prevention are the foundation of feline health. Senior cats benefit from a physical exam every six months.

Signs something is wrong

Cats hide illness. Watch for changes in appetite, water intake, litter box habits, weight, grooming, or activity. Any cat who stops eating for more than 24 hours needs prompt veterinary care — cats can develop a dangerous liver condition (hepatic lipidosis) after even a short fast.

Dental health

Dental disease is one of the most common — and most overlooked — health issues in cats. Bad breath, drooling, or difficulty eating warrant a dental exam. Professional cleanings and daily brushing (with cat-safe toothpaste) protect long-term health.

Weight and body condition

You should be able to feel your cat's ribs with a light touch and see a subtle waist from above. Obesity in cats sharply increases the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and liver disease.

Parasite prevention

Even indoor cats can get fleas, worms, and other parasites. Use a monthly preventive recommended by your veterinarian year-round.

Building a relationship with your vet

Choose a veterinarian your cat tolerates well, ideally a cat-friendly practice, and keep records organized. A veterinarian who knows your cat over years catches subtle changes earlier.
